Marking anniversary of the Kadinjaca battle
"My
beloved country, did you know the whole battalion died here? The blood blooms
through the fallen snow, cold and white. During the night, wind swept away the
traces, but still in the south, the army walks. The 14th kilometer fell, but
Kadinjača never will!"
A delegation of the New Communist Party of Yugoslavia laid a wreath at The Battle of Kadinjaca memorial complex , marking the 78th anniversary of the Battle of Kadinjaca.
By laying the wreath at the memorial complex "Kadinjača" today the
78th anniversary of the Battle of Kadinjaca, when on 29 November 1941 270
soldiers of the Workers Battalion, protecting the retreat of the Supreme
Headquarters, resisted a far more superior enemy laying their lives to slow
down the offensive of the German army.
The Operation Uzice, was the first major operation by the German Wehrmacht
on the occupied territory of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The offensive launched
in late September and lasted until the beginning of December 1941. For this
operation, the German Army led by General Franz Bohme employed its 125th
Infantry Regiment brought from Greece, 113th Infantry Division brought from the
Eastern Front, 342nd Infantry Division brought from France, and parts of 704,
714, 717, and 718 Infantry Divisions. They were assisted by Dimitrije Ljotic’s
troops, Kosta Pecanac’s troops, and others, amounting to around 60.000 to
80.000 soldiers.
Kadinjača was a place of sacrifice in the name of ideals and faith and
freedom as a condition of life must be defended.
For the soldiers of the Workers Battalion was a task that had to be
completed, regardless of the fact that hey were outnumbered by ten times and
possessed the most modern armed forces. Hundreds of them made a supreme effort
by holding at bay occupying forces, whose leadership on Kadinjaca sent more
than three thousand soldiers. During this time, Supreme Headquarters and
partisan hospital managed to get evacuated. The fighters were aware that they
would not return from Kadinjaca. They were ordinary people and honest workers
on whom the war imposed roles they did not want in the first place, but which
they accepted boldly and without hesitation.
